Featured Artist: Egbert Oudendag @ George Elliot Secondary School (Community/Small Gym)
Sep 9 all-day

Paintings by West Coast master, Egbert Oudendag, will be on exhibit at Lake Country ArtWalk 2017. Considering the theme ‘Colour Me Canada’ in recognition of Canada’s 150th anniversary, the show and sale is a timely addition to ArtWalk. Paul and Carney Oudendag of Kelowna are pleased to release paintings from the family collection that pay homage to the beauty of the west coast of Canada, the art of plein air painting and the contributions of immigrant artist, Egbert Oudendag, to the arts and culture of Canada.

About the Artist
Born in 1914, Oudendag was a Dutch immigrant who lived and painted in the Vancouver and White Rock areas until his death in 1998. Fiercely individualistic with many eccentricities in both life and art, Egbert customized his paints with a guarded mix of varnish and oil, which he would transfer back into the tubes, creating a unique quality to his work. He worked almost exclusively en plein air, so primed Masonite panels were a convenient substrate for coastal landscapes, mountains, boats, beaches and many derelict sheds and buildings. Oudendag’s ‘alla prima’ style of oil painting was done in a direct, expressive way and completed while still wet. His works are distinctly minimalist and sparse, yet striking and subtle.
Oudendag’s late friend and influential BC artist, Robert Genn, made a short documentary video about Egbert and has mentioned him in his Painter’s Keys newsletters. Genn observed, “He was a rugged individualist who was capable of running his own show, and completely oblivious to what other people thought.”

Plein Air Gallery @ George Elliot Secondary School (Hallway outside room 112)

Plein Air painting is done while outside, so is often referred to as “open air painting.” Even though this approach is a challenge for artists because they need to deal with time limits, the weather and changing light, it is still a popular painting activity.

These paintings from many locations in Canada form a distinct display outside of in Room 112 in George Elliot Secondary School.

  • Bio
The J.S. Garcia Band hails from Lake Country BC, and is well known locally for their dynamic energy and crowd-pleasing performances.

The band is fronted by the mother and daughter duo of Jenn and Sophia Boal, two singer/songwriter/guitarists whose infectious harmonies and on-stage energy has earned the band a reputation for “ballads and sass”.

The J.S. Garcia Band is rounded out with the solid backing of keyboardist Laverne Berget, drummer Chris Shriek, and bassist Robby McAlpine. Mixing folk, country, pop and rock styles, the band exudes that rare combination of superb musicianship, onstage-chemistry, and rapport with the audience. An evening with the J.S. Garcia Band is always memorable: this is a band that loves what they do, and they do it well.
